Information About Guardians Ad Litem
Our founding partner, Dale A. Wren, has been a guardian ad litem. In this capacity, he has served as a court-appointed advocate for children's rights in legal matters such as divorce, child custody, domestic violence and adoption. In particular, guardians ad litem are often used when one parent accuses the other of being incapable of providing adequate care, or when parents are unable to resolve custody issues after many attempts.
Duties
The duties of the guardian ad litem include investigating the circumstances under which the child lives. This can include home visits, parent interviews and consultations with other attorneys. A guardian ad litem also interviews teachers, neighbors, day care providers and others involved in the child's life to acquire the information needed to recommend the best course of action for the child, and write a report for the record.
Experienced Family Law Attorney Who Is Also a Guardian Ad Litem
Because of our attorneys' experience serving as a guardian ad litem, our law firm knows how to work with others serving in this capacity in cases involving the firm's clients. We understand why the guardian ad litem needs certain information and how it should be provided. We also help clients select a guardian ad litem when they have the opportunity; in some cases, the court appoints the guardian without input from the parents.
Who Pays for This Service?
Because guardians ad litem are usually appointed only when the parents cannot agree on child-related issues, it is common for them to disagree about paying for the guardian ad litem. In such instances, the judge will determine how much each party will pay.
